Rangoon is a love triangle happens during World War 2. In 1940, India was fighting for the independence. There were differences between Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose regarding their principles. Bose established Azad Hind Fauj to combat with the British army. He joined hands with Japan. Jamadar Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor) is in the British Army and fights against the Japanese army.
Julia (Kangana Ranaut) is a popular Indian actress. Rusi Billimoria (Saif Ali Khan) is her mentor and lover. He bought her and made her an actress. Julia wants to marry him.
British Officers send Julia to the Indo-Burma border to entertain British troops. They hire Nawab for her security. The Japanese army suddenly attacks during this trip. Nawab and Julia get separated from their troops and fall in love with each other.
Julia realizes that Nawab has a secret. Rusi gets aware about their affair.
It will be interesting to see this love triangle shaping in war situations in ‘Rangoon.’
Vishal Bhardwaj is a known for his storytelling. He says Rangoon’s story in a simpler manner. His characters are intense. Rangoon is a story of love, betrayal, and patriotism. Also, Bhardwaj has added sub tracks creatively in one movie. He shows many layers to the main story like as India’s freedom struggle, World War 2, Indian film industry during 40s era, etc.
The first half establishes characters. The second half depicts about Nawab-Julia intense yet entertaining love story. That’s why the second half has a slow pace.
The war scenes have shot on a grand scale. They look convinced and interesting.
Production Design, Costume Designing, and Cinematography are other major assets of Rangoon. They have created the 40s era perfectly on the screen.
Despite having less presence on the screen, Saif Ali Khan has done the compelling job. Shahid Kapoor makes alive his character. He looks like a real soldier. His intense looks are best. Kangana Ranaut impresses us by her action scenes and dancing. She is a perfect blend of innocence and power in the movie. She has done outstanding work in such emotional scenes. In Rangoon, she has emerged as an actress. Richard McCabe is amazing.
Dialogues are beautiful and witty in such situations.
Songs help to take the narrative forward.
The story is predictable. The script is also weak. There is no twist in the story, as it goes in a simpler manner. The climax is messy. The editing could be crisper. The Special effects look fake.
Is this movie worth a watch?
Yes. Definitely for performances of main actors. It is an intense and beautiful experience. Watch it!
